Reptile Surveys

If your site contains scrub, rough grassland or open woodland it may well contain one or more of the common reptile species, such as slow worms, common lizards, grass snakes or adders. Reptiles are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) (as amended). If present, reptiles would have to be translocated out of the development site into an appropriate alternative site before development could legally take place. Ecological Sustainability can assess your site for suitability for reptiles and if suitable habitat is found can carry out a full reptile survey. The full reptile survey will show which species (if any) are present and also provide an estimate of the population sizes. From this information we can advise on the level of mitigation required and the likely time it would take to translocate the populations. A reptile translocation in general requires a minimum of between 60-90 days trapping. Ecological Sustainability have many years experience of reptile translocations and have carried out numerous reptile translocations, including very large scale ones. Reptile surveys can only be carried out at certain times of the year so if it is considered reptiles might be present it is best to obtain advice as soon as possible.
