Walkover survey and Extended Phase 1 Survey

Usually local authorities will require an initial survey to determine the ecological value of habitats on a site and the likelihood of protected species being present. Ecological Sustainability Limited offer two main forms of initial survey. These are Walkover Surveys and the more in depth Extended Phase 1 Survey.

Walkover survey

A walkover is a basic survey carried out to identify any potential ecological issues on a site, such as the possibility of protected species or habitats being present. It is usually sufficient for small sites with little ecological interest. For sites with moderate to high ecological interest often a more detailed initial survey might be required, such as an Extended Phase 1 Survey.

Extended Phase 1 Survey

This involves (as well as the site survey), production of a map showing habitats on site and a data search of biological records. The data search would identify any recorded protected species close to the site as well as any protected habitats nearby.

The initial surveys described above would identify any ecological issues on site. This could include a requirement for additional surveying, such as specific targeted surveys for protected fauna or flora. These further surveys would usually be carried out in order to determine presence or likely absence of a protected species or group on site. They may also give some indication of population size. Recommendations can then be made as to level of mitigation required prior to development. Mitigation work required might include obtaining a licence to develop the site, translocating a population out of the development area, excluding animals from the development area with fencing and enhancing, creating or managing habitats or the benefit of specific species.
